When you look at some products out there, you have probably seen of Indonesia’s organic label, usually called as SNI, or other certified organic labels. But what is the meaning of those labels? What kind of regulations that they need to fulfill in order to obtain those certificates? On this occasion, we will be talking about all of them, one by one.

The word organic itself has a meaning as substances that are derived from living things, where in this context, it refers to a group of food or consuming goods that are grown without the usage of pesticides. Therefore, it can be concluded that these organic certifications are gifted by certain institutions that have already met the requirements of certain policies.

In Indonesia, there’s an Organic Certification Institution, or LSO, which of course have been accredited. In the applicable laws of Indonesia, it is stated that a company can only say that their products are organic when they have received a certification from standardized institutions. Products that have already met the requirements will be allowed to use the SNI Organic logo.

These organic certifications also exist outside of Indonesia. For example, there’s USDA Organic, originating from the USA, Control Union Certification, headquartered in the Netherlands, EU Organic Certification from Europe. All these organizations have the same objective, which is to ensure that a product that have organic labels actually went through an organic process too. A product can be given a label by seeing the land that they use, how they are processed, packaged, marketed, and lastly distributed.

During cultivation, there are some conditions that need to be fulfilled. The most common one is that in the process of planting, chemical fertilizers should not be used. Controlling pests also do not use pesticides or chemical herbicides. If they do use organic pesticides, they need to be the ones that are certified as organic. Land used in the planting process is also to be noted, as they must have a clear legality, is not in an area of protected forest, or have a management permit from an authorized authority.

So it can be seen that if a product wants to obtain an organic certification, it must go through strict checking.
