Indonesia is the number 4 coffee-producing country in the world (based on 2021 data) with a total coffee export of 668,677 metric tons. Coffee plantations in Indonesia have a total area of 1.29 million hectares (2022), with the largest plantation area held by the province of South Sulawesi with an area of 268,000 hectares. Most of the coffee plantations in South Sulawesi are managed by the community, the rest are managed by the state and the private sector. One of the private parties that manage coffee plantations in South Sulawesi, in Tana Toraja to be precise, is PT. Sulotco Jaya Abadi.
PT. Sulotco Jaya Abadi was established in 1986. Occupying an area of 1,200 hectares in the Rantekarua mountains, Sulotco Jaya Abadi is the largest private coffee plantation in Indonesia. This plantation was built with a business concept that involves the community around the plantation. At an altitude of 1,500-1,700 meters above sea level, the Sulotco Jaya Abadi coffee plantation cultivates Arabica coffee plants.
Sulotco Jaya Abadi is known for producing quality coffees, including Kalosi Toraja coffee, Kalosi Celebes coffee, and Kopi Luwak which is one of the best and most expensive coffees in the world.
Sulotco coffee plantations are managed in a partnership system between the company and coffee farmers. Every time it is harvested, Sulotco applies a profit-sharing system of 25% for companies and 75% for farmers. Farmers' crops are bought by the company at a good price. With this system, it is hoped that it can provide welfare for Toraja coffee farmers and increase a sense of ownership for the sustainability of this coffee plantation itself in the future.
PT. Sulotco Jaya Abadi applies organic farming methods to maintain the balance and sustainability of the natural environment and microclimate around the Rantekarua mountains, which play a very important role in producing the best organic Arabica coffee in the world. As part of that goal, the company has also set aside 200 hectares of the total land area to be used as a nature conservation area which cannot be managed so it remains untouched.
The popularity of Toraja coffee internationally has led to a high demand for this coffee from South Sulawesi. To fulfill this request, PT. Sulotco Jaya Abadi often participates in international coffee events in order to introduce Arabica coffee beans from our plantations in Toraja. In the near future, Sulotco Jaya Abadi will take part in the 2023 Specialty Coffee Expo event in Portland, Oregon, United States of America. This event lasts for 3 days from 21 to 23 April 2023. Don't miss it.
